Goose

Goose (AKA Goosey, Goosimus, Silly Goose), Therapy Dog in Training

Goose is one of the friendliest dogs around!  He is a mix of Weimaraner, Silver Lab, along with many other breeds.  He is 4 years old and has always been playful, friendly, and overly snuggly with his family and friends.  When he is not chasing balls, roaming the dog parks, hiking with his family, and dreaming of chasing squirrels, he can be found in his favorite spot on the couch!  He loves people and especially enjoys spending time with his family Sarah, her husband and two toddlers, along with Timmy the cat (who all share cuddles with him often). We’re so excited to share our furry friend with all of you in our practice!

*Please note, should you not wish to include Goose in your sessions, that is not a problem!  Goose won’t be offended (nor will we) and he will always have a separate space to go to if a client is hesitant and/or not comfortable.  We understand everyone has a preference and it is at your discretion whether you want him included or not.  Your comfort is always our top priority.

You may be asking, what are the benefits of therapy dogs in a counseling setting? Here are some of the key advantages:

Emotional Support: Interacting with a therapy dog can provide immediate comfort and emotional support to clients, especially those experiencing anxiety, stress, or trauma. The presence of a friendly, non-judgmental animal can help create a calming atmosphere and reduce feelings of distress.

Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Petting or simply being in the presence of a therapy dog has been shown to lower cortisol levels and reduce stress and anxiety. This can be particularly beneficial for clients who may feel overwhelmed or tense during counseling sessions.

Increased Comfort and Trust: Therapy dogs can help to create a warm and inviting environment in counseling sessions, making clients feel more comfortable and at ease. This can encourage openness and honesty, as clients may feel more inclined to share their thoughts and feelings in the presence of a furry companion.

Improved Mood: Spending time with a therapy dog can boost mood and increase feelings of happiness and well-being. The unconditional love and affection provided by the dog can uplift spirits and help clients to focus on the positive aspects of their lives.

Enhanced Social Interaction: Therapy dogs can facilitate social interaction and communication, particularly for clients who may find it challenging to engage with others. The presence of a dog can serve as a conversation starter and encourage clients to interact with their counselor and peers in group therapy settings.

Distraction and Relaxation: Therapy dogs can offer a welcome distraction from difficult emotions or thoughts, allowing clients to take a mental break and focus on the present moment. Engaging in activities such as playing fetch or going for a walk with the dog can promote relaxation and mindfulness.

Promotion of Physical Activity: For clients who may benefit from increased physical activity, interacting with a therapy dog can encourage movement and exercise. Taking the dog for a walk or participating in activities such as agility training can promote physical health and well-being.

Sense of Purpose and Responsibility: In some cases, caring for a therapy dog or participating in activities such as grooming and training can provide clients with a sense of purpose and responsibility. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals struggling with low self-esteem or feelings of worthlessness.

Overall, therapy dogs play a valuable role in counseling practices by providing unconditional support, promoting emotional well-being, and enhancing the therapeutic experience for clients of all ages and backgrounds. Their presence can make counseling sessions more enjoyable and effective, ultimately contributing to positive outcomes for clients seeking support and healing.  We hope you find that Goose provides all (or at least some) of these things for you!
